Four cases of Krukenberg Tumor Metastatic from Breast Cancer and Three cases of Bilateral Breast Cancer

Abstract
This paper is a clinico-pathological analysis of four cases of Krukenberg tumor metastatic from breast cancer and three cases of bilateral breast cancer with the review of literature and efficiency of prophylactic oophorectomy.
During the period of 6 years and 8 months from Jan. 1970 to Aug. 1976, total 66 cases of breast cancer were confirmed pathologically at Dept. of Surgery, Korea General Hospital. Among them, oophorectomy was performed recently in 10 cases for prophylactic or therapeutic purpose, and 4 cases of Krukenberg tutor, secondary to breast cancer, were found. During the same period, 12 cases of Krukenberg tumor were diagnosed by pathological examination 7 cases from stomach cancer, 4 cases from breast cancer and 1 case of undetermined origin. We also experienced 3 cases of bilateral breast cancer (4.5%), 2 simultaneously and 1 asynchrono-usly.
In review of literature, we were impressed that some authors prefer to perform a prophylactic oophorectomy because of;
First, relatively high incidence of metastasis from breast to ovary (12~30%) Second, the possibility of occult metastasis even in Stage I
Third, it has a tendency to lengthen the free interval from mastectomy to metastasis. Fourth, in cases of ovarian metastasis in Stage II , tithe local radiation therapy may not be always indicated
